One Person Dies in Langdon Fire

Langdon, New Hampshire – New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey and Langdon Fire Chief Greg Chaffee announce that a fire occurred in a shed/workshop located at 3 Darby Brook Ln. in Langdon on January 5, 2023, at approximately 6:00 AM. The Langdon Fire Department responded to the scene along with Golden Cross Ambulance and they encountered a wood-framed shed that was totally engulfed in fire.

A person had been injured in the fire and escaped the building. They were transported to Cheshire Medical Center and then to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. They died on January 10, 2023 as a result of their injuries. The victim has been identified as Crystal Chase, age 29. The cause and manner of death are pending at this time.

The investigation into the origin & cause of the fire found that it appears to have started in an area near a wood stove, which was in use and suspected of causing the fire; however, an electrical issue could also not be ruled out. The cause of the fire is therefore undetermined, and the cause classification for this fire is accidental.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the NH State Fire Marshal’s Office at (603) 223-4289 or by email at fmo@dos.nh.gov.

State Fire Marshal Toomey wants to remind everyone of the importance of maintaining wood-burning appliances and chimneys and have them cleaned annually. Please take care to properly dispose of the wood stove’s ash away from the house. Ash can stay hot and cause fires even days later. Keep combustible materials at least three to five-feet away from any heating appliance. Ensure pathways both inside and outside the home, to all exits, are maintained and clear. If you have any questions about fire safety in your homes please contact your local fire department or the NH State Fire Marshal’s Office.

No further information will be released at this time.
